Can you as a Health Coach act as my Medical Practitioner?
No, a health coach including myself cannot manage, diagnose, treat or prescribe for any condition you suffer with. I cannot act as your medical practitioner. I cannot order and interpret labs or provide psychotherapy.
As a coach I can however work closely with your Medical Practitioner, who will develop your plan of medical care. I can collaborate with your doctor, dietitian, or therapist, should you consent to this, to provide you with the best possible care.
Do you believe in Conventional Medicine?
Absolutely, I do believe Conventional Medicine can be life saving. When it when it comes to emergency interventions it is the best medicine in the world.
When it comes to chronic illness, medications can truly save lives too and improve quality of life, but this isn’t always the case. Sometimes these medications have side effects that are as hard to tolerate as the disease itself. Sometimes they are ineffective at managing the chronic disease and require higher and higher doses or additional medications added to the mix. There can be so much trial and error. For many patients including myself, this can be soul destroying.
This is where Functional Medicine is so powerful at addressing the underlying root cause of the disease. It treats the whole system, not the symptom; the patient, not the disease and after time can result in less, not more medications for complete healing.
I personally believe there is a place for all medicine, be it Conventional, Functional or Integrative Medicine. I believe this choice lies with the patient. From a coaching perspective I do not judge any route a client chooses. I have tried all three in my personal journey, and all have offered me success in an area of my healing.
As a previous Physiotherapist I was trained with a Conventional Medicine approach. Through my health coaching certification, I was trained from a Functional Medicine approach. I have a great understanding of both models. I do believe both can successfully be used simultaneously, as I have done with my own health, to create better health outcomes and greater long term healing for an individual.
